MY FAVORITE EXAMPLE FOR A STRATEGIC CAMPAIGN ROLLOUT: THE BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE

 

Personally I love movies. I also analyze how movies are marketed.

 

One of my favorite examples of a great promotional campaign is the “blockbuster hit” movie. 

 

Movies are an artistic body of work, but they are also a business. We can learn alot about marketing by just observing a successful rollout of the latest “must see” movie. 

 

In general , the goal of every movie is to sell more tickets than the cost of the film. Just like every business, it needs to turn a profit to be successful in terms of business success. And although the “product” is the film itself. The creative teasers and marketing assets are equaly if not more important to the success of the film at the box office.

 

Movie rollouts use strategy.

 

They do this with a variety of creative assets to build the hype around the film and get people to buy the tickets. Some examples of creative assets are:

 

  • Teaser and trailers: 
  • Posters and billboards

If they have executed the plan successfully, the movie will not only yield a profit but also leave customers satisfied that they watched the film. Truly successful movies can create a “brand” that sells sequels and has customers coming back for more. The rocky franchise is a great example of this as it continues to win spanning over decades. It is a Brand at this point and embodies something greater that any 1 off movie.
