Creative Writing Services at Dreamvision: Elevating your Narrative

A compelling narrative is the heart and soul of every creative project. Whether you’re making a short film, documentary, commercial , social media content or even creating a brand identity, your idea must follow a clear narrative direction. The script is the foundation of any creative project.

Every great project starts with a blueprint.

In this article we want to touch on why it’s critical to start every project with a solid script, what  to look for in a good script, and how writing a good script can be the preparation you need to give your projects a satisfying or purposeful ending (which is the whole point). We will also go over our top 3 tips for writing great scripts.

The Importance of Starting with a Solid Script

As said before, a well written script will lay the groundwork for your entire project. It will serve as your blueprint, defining the narrative structure, character development, pacing , dialogue and visual cues in your production. Without a sturdy script, even a project that has incredible visuals and imagery can fail to connect with those who watch. Like any great filmmaker will tell you, the story is king.

What to look for in a Good Script

When thinking about what makes a good script, there are a few critical elements to keep in mind.

1.Have a worthy Story: In our opinion, a good story will take you on a journey for the sole purpose to teach you something or make a strong statement.

2.Well- Defined Characters: Characters should be well developed, relatable, and should serve the purpose of the story somehow.

3. Cohesive Structure: The script should follow a logical structure with a clear beginning, middle and end.

4.Visual Description: Good Scripts will paint a picture with the words. The better you can descibe a scene or event, the easier it will be able to execute and film.

5. Dialogues: Dialogues should be realistic and serve to advance the story.

6. Pacing: The pacing is the tempo of your scenes. You should alway aim to match the scene and mood of the story with its pacing. You can also use pacing to keep your audience on their toes.

Deliver a Satisfying Ending

3 Scriptwriting Tips to achieve a great resolution to your script:

  • Begin with the End in mind

Just like your favorite comedian delivers a hilarious punchline, you should set up all elements of your story so that when your punchline is delivered, it has maximum impact. When writing any script all elements of the story should lead up to this moment.

In a narrative film, this usually is the ending of the film. In a commercial or advertising piece, this will usually be the call to action. Commonly in commercials the “product” becomes the solution to the main character’s problems. Even when scripting social media posts, you should script out your idea, understanding the punchline first, then working backwards to set up your story for maximum imact.

I’m not a comedian, however I can assume when they write their material they start with a funny idea or punchline, and work back to make sure when they deliver the line, it makes  you laugh.

  • Follow a Logical Structure

The most common structure for any script is the 3 act structure: Beginning, MIddle and end. However there are many ways to format a good script. Depending on your project you may use your own structure or something that is custom made for the project. As long a as you have some organization, and you understand the most important element of your is communicating your message.

  • Rewrite it a few times

From our experience we have found that the first draft is never the best version. If you rewrite your script a few times , you can tighten it up and add and subtract elements that take away from the idea. The theme stated of your project should be clear, so rewriting can help you cut out any fluff.
